How is Old Boy and Symapthy For Mr Vengeance connected? Same characters? Is it a prequel?

They're the first two films in a revenge trilogy. There's a charactor from Sympathy in OldBoy, an obvious one, seeing as everyone dies in Sympathy, but a clever introduction.
