Six-Word Reviews of 1,302 SXSW MP3s
via jwz:
"You know, when I listened to all of the 2007 and 2008 SXSW torrents, I thought that was kind of hardcore.

I was wrong.

Paul Ford is hardcore. He listened to all of the 2008 songs, all the way through, and wrote six word reviews of each."

Brilliant reviews, even. Fun, sparkling, delightful reviews like "This guitarist has too many feelings." rated with a well thought out yet amusingly arbitrary rating system gently broken into sections by band name anecdotes, clever charts, perceptive bon mots, and the occasional entertaining short-yet-rewarding paragraph about a particular song/artist/title/genre, like, "ANTHEM: This song by Born in the Flood is inexcusable. Consider: (1) It is called “Anthem,” and it is an anthem. (2) It sounds like Bono and the Edge riding around on Sparklehorses. (3) I can’t understand the lyrics but there’s a crown mentioned. It was heretofore considered impossible for any singer to overcome these cognitive challenges in order to create a distinct and memorable song. And yet this man does exactly that. Or to put it another way: When you were 23 and living alone without many friends and definitely no girlfriends, did you ever jerk off and cry at the same time? This is your song."

In a word, the article was glorious. Even better, thankfully, oh so thankfully, Paul Ford has done it again. Click. Read. Enjoy.

ps. Dan's review, four out of five stars, "It’s difficult, living as an automaton."

"Starts cool, but sprouts baseball cap." So dead on.

I've never tried his one or two star songs, but of the fours and fives, he's dead on.

It's nothing some more crying in the bathroom at work won't eventually fix.

Figuratively, but I've still had much better days.

Of Zaki Ibrahim's "Love-Like" - Delivery not marked “urgent.” Rainstick. Canadian.

I was ready to be politely offended for all of hippie-kind when I noticed the punctuation in "rainstick Canadian" wasn't what I originally thought. I kind of liked this little 2 circle entry as a pleasant background song that is entirely non-intrusive. I'll have to check out some of the 5's and 4's.

The whole concept brought to my mind a favourite from my friend's 365 which introduced me to the six word story Flickr group.

There's websites devoted to Six Word Story.

I'm going to be heading down to Norwescon, I think. Got any plans?

I knew that the six word story was something new to me but certainly not new. Always a tad behind the memetic curve am I.

I had forgotten that Norwescon was coming up again. I had no plans yet, but if you'll be here then I'm there. I've missed you, m'dear. Are Joseph and/or Robin the local coordinators? Keep me in the loop on any planning emails or what have you.

I had forgotten, too, actually, until Angel mentioned it. So far no one's really been planning anything, at least not with me, but I figured I would plan for it anyway, just because it seems like the sort of thing I should do.

S'all good. Or it will be, eventually, after I get over the hurt. I thought I was better friends with someone than I am, apparently. It's amazing what shallow opinions people can form when they live long distance.

And how are you? I saw the pictures you posted of the fog. It sounds magical there, where you live now, magical in a very primal way that has nothing to do with glossy Disney.

Long distance isn't going to change my loving you.

I'm okay, thanks. Employment would make everything perfect. I'm between interviews and waiting breathlessly to hear from someone. Tense. Broke. Otherwise very happy.

It is magical here. There's no hyperbole involved in it being called The Land of Enchantment. I'll post more pictures. I look forward to your being here to experience it. I miss you.
