King Kong didn't have enough Adrien Brody, dinosaur punching or kicking ass for the lord to excuse the length, let alone the blatant racism.

It started out with a Al "blackface" Jolson singing I'm On Top Of The World, then moved onto an island, populated only by the darkest natives that special effects money could possibly buy, where all the ethnic characters conveniently died in less then ten minutes. I was amazed. Also, could she possibly scream a little more? I don't think there was quite enough. Please, take yourself more seriously, because audiences don't like 100 million dollars movies about giant apes that aren't burdened with poignant scenes of ice-skating with toy women.

much worse re: the racism in the film was kong himself: an enormous, black subhuman with violent tendencies, an obsession with blondes, but deepdown! a heart of gold (awwww). I mean, it isn't birth of a nation, but holycrap the condescension!

I am continually glad that I live in Canada. Also, that I don't tend to see many Hollywood films. I was tired of the cliche's before I went to L.A. Now I'm tired of the people who live them.

the system itself here is a large part of the problem. so many well intentioned teachers just end up becoming cogs, churning out more, well, americans.

option 2: buy a boat. find some groovy people. go west until we're in international waters. declare ourselves a traveling autonomous zone.

I remember when Gmail came out and suddenly everyone decided it was Teh Bestest Thang Ever, Dude! and I pointed out how annoying it would be to have spiders crawling through correspondances all the time and no one believed me.

indeed. At one point, I was really confused, because whenever my then-partner emailed me, the ads would be for rene magritte prints, my favorite painter. later, I figured out it was because her signature line was "ceci n'est pas un pipe." I was basically spooked.

I haven't been to the Bay Area in many years and I was only there briefly. I rather regret that I havent' managed ot find my way there again. It seemed so beautiful.
