NASA announced Tuesday that its new crew exploration vehicle will be named Orion.

Duncan sent me this to complement my recent post on how to ding Focus On the Family: Baby Got Bible.

It seems that in response to us, not only have they begun implementing cookies, but they have taken down the Narnia DVD! Just how much notice did that post get?? You people are freaking me out.

One Giant Blunder for Mankind: How NASA Lost Moon Pictures.

Getting a lot done today, but only during the afternoon, as if the lost art of film editing was being applied to pack all the action into only two hours. I have cheques to pick up, work to arrange, and a focus group to attend. Simple things, wishes carrying my feet forward. Fortuitously, last night was the first night in a month that I slept home and alone. I was woken by a phone-call, Michael from Drumheller. He wants to know if I can build him an Electronic Press Kit for his Frank Zappa band. He might be visiting soon. Haloes dripping down like the unexpected rain drowning the sky outside.

I was so fucking disappointed when I found out that the new spacecraft would be called Orion. At first I had thought that they'd resurrected the old Project Orion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)), which would have been extremely cool.

Ah well.

And as for your Focus on the Family post... well... it started in the Stranger (http://www.thestranger.com), and worked its way outward from there, via a lot more channels than just your (admittedly (in)famous) bl0g. So there you go.

Well, after Warren Ellis linked it, you got MetaFiltered too. I hear tell you were also linked on BoingBoing, although I didn't see the post. And I linked from a couple places, and someone else told me it was all over their friends list. So that's an awful lot of linkage.

From: [identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com
Do you have links for that?

Date: 2006-08-30 04:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] triskadekaphile.livejournal.com
Well, here's the MetaFilter (http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/54335) link. Also, there's at least three trackbacks on the original Ellis entry to other blogs that carried it.

I put it in my journal, and on MySpace, and it was posted on MS by a friend of mine as well (with a much larger friend list), and I know a friend of mine in Olympia shared it with everyone he knows there. As you know, these things have a tendency to travel.

I don't see it on BoingBoing, and as I said that was just what I heard, but I'll let you know if I can dig that link up as well.

Whoops, I lied, I wasn't informed of it being on Boing Boing. Misunderstood that email. Sorry.

Actually I'm kind of surprised they haven't picked it up yet, to be honest; seems like its their kind of thing.

I have to put my 2 cents in too. I heard about the Focus on the Family story days before you posted about it. I noticed someone commented that you should cite your sources. I agree. Your post is almost verbatim what the Stranger story was. If I was Noel Black (the original author), I'd be pretty upset. "As also told in the Stranger" (your edit) is much different than saying "originally written by..." As your blog gets more popular, I would be extra careful not to plagiarize. Slippery slope, this.

There is my 2 cents. No GST added.

Af for citing cources, what post are you refering to? Neither this one, or the one that is linked in this one has "As also told in the Stranger" anywhere in the post.

Ahh... I see to what you refer... It's the Seattle Stranger. That would explain why a Find didn't catch it.

I didn't get the info form the Stranger though, I got it from about four other little posts and put things together. Instructions are going to be the same when they're instructions. I linked the The Stranger article as soon as I was shown it. The people who had put up their posts hadn't mentioned it.

Yeah, I don't mean to go on and on (but maybe I do just by saying that), but it isn't just instructions. It is written in a very distinct voice and style that isn't just a "here's how to make a cake" instructions. I'm not saying that you deliberately passed someone else's work off as your own, but in a sense you did. Think about if someone used one of your posts that you worked hours on and posted it as his or her own, with a few minor adjustments. Then claimed credit for the information being widely disseminated.

You're not the only one who should have cited the Stranger article. All I'm saying is this would have got you kicked out of university (or heavily censured) for cheating. I know, I know, this isn't school, but intellectual property is intellectual property. Over and out.

You're preaching to the choir. I certainly quoted people who thought of things that I otherwise wouldn't have, like feeling guilty about it, but I spent quite a bit of my own time writing that post. Checking the steps and double-checking and describing them. I was thrown for a bit of a loop when I discovered that there was a main source article and I tacked it on as soon as I knew about it. I'm only hoping that citing the article at the bottom will be enough, because I don't want anyone to think that I'm taking credit for an idea that's been floating around for months.

What impresses me about that video is how they did the whole song and made it make sense... even if I don't agree with it.

Yeah me too. They got all the riffs and asides and all that and made it humorous and cheeky as well. Not many of the rhymes felt shoehorned or anything. I don't really agree with the subject matter either but props to them for making such a well thought out parody.

Hey man, don't mess with the queers. We will take you OUT! I got your post sent to me from at least 2 or 3 people before making an order myself. You give us a chance to fuck with the homophobes, and we'll be all over it. Thanks for the instructions and easy activism - glad you're using your profits to benefit a pro-LBGT group.

I remarked just yesterday, if only we leased the Canadian voters when we were voting for a President, we wouldn't be in this stupid Bushism.

More notice than I am used to getting, though I've had spikes like this in the past through Warren's graces. Feel free to wander as much as you like, it's all public and the more people, the more interesting things get, I figure.

And though you certainly woulnd't have gotten Bush, (not saying you did legally anyway, really), don't paint us too milk & honey. After all, we have the most horrible politician we've ever had in charge right now, Stephen Harper. (Who is a staunch Focus on the Family supporter, apparently)
