Gorgeous isn't it?

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I know about >-< this much about the book, but it looks gorgeous.

[identity profile] themythicalman.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I know! It's crazy. I'm now hopeful, whereas before I felt like another childhood memory was about to be anally raped.

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I never read it as a child. in fact, I wasn't even aware it existed until I was in my twenties, and that's far, far too late to care.

[identity profile] themythicalman.livejournal.com 2009-03-29 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not at all, I say! I'm finding that (re)discovering these books later in life gives me a whole new appreciation for them. There's an awful lot of garbage out there, and jewels are jewels.

Now, if someone would only make a feature-length movie of 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies'.

[identity profile] hibiscustea.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Holy Cats. I think I need to see that.

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
We should go together, and squeal over the incredible puppetry.

[identity profile] hibiscustea.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that would be lovely! Is it all animatronics? (How old-school is that, if it is!)

[identity profile] jason0x21.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've got to send you that Warren Ellis / Joss Whedon parody trailer for this...

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Do I even want to know?

[identity profile] jason0x21.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll be relieved to know I made it up completely.

[identity profile] serizawa3000.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stop crying at the beauty of it...

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww.

I've had respect for the book as one ot those classics that have inspired many people, and as good source art for tattoos I've seen, but I have long since forgotten the few times I personally experienced it in my childhood.

The film definitely looks like it has some quality talent and vision behind it, though.

I am dimly recalling an interesting SIFF (VIFF?) film chronicling a somewhat rocky collaboration between Mssr. Sendak and Pilobolus. "The Last Dance" perhaps?

I was a little concerned when I'd read that there was talk of reshooting the film because it was too scary or whatever...

I never thought the Wild Things themselves were scary... sure, they have fangs and claws and horns and are huge, but Sendak somehow drew them as, I dunno, friendly-looking. Smiling.

From what I've read about the history of the book, Sendak named the Wild Things after his aunts and uncles... Bernard, Tzippeh, Moishe, Aaron, Emil, etc. The Wild Things have names in the movie, apparently, but not the same as the ones Sendak came up with.

I think the Wild Things themselves were fabricated by Jim Henson's people... and I get a goofy kick out of realizing that the Wild Thing at the beginning is voiced by James Gandolfini...

That looks fucking awesome

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
DAVID EGGERS! EEEEEEEE!

[identity profile] following-bliss.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, this one really got to me too. It's gorgeous in all the right ways.

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the new revolution of animatronics, I'm loving it. Down with bad CG!

[identity profile] serizawa3000.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Jim Henson's Creature Shop FTW... :)

[identity profile] slojae.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
one of my favorite childhood books... and didn't even know they made a movie till i saw this

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ta-dah! Yep. I've been following the production stills for awhile now, just because they looked so scrumptious, though I never had any attachment to the books.

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*high five*

[identity profile] eosandman.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This will not be a mediocre film! I can only see it as being ass or awesome.

And did anyone else feel shades of "Dark Crystal" from the trailer?

[identity profile] porphyre.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I trust Spike Jonze to make things that Do Not Suck.

And yes! I'm thrilled traditional creature making is coming back. Bits by bit, sure, but it's wonderful all the same.

[identity profile] frankie23.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Literally, and I mean, *literally*, every hair on my arms was standing up. Wow.

[identity profile] frankie23.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. An even bigger fan of Spike Jonze. The man makes movies that're like sweet music for my eyes.
